Danilo Donati ( notable efforts: The Taming of the Shrew (1967), Oedipus Rex (1967), Satyricon (1969), The Decameron (1971), Roma (1972), The Canterbury Tales (1972), Arabian Nights (1974), Salo, or the 120 Days of Sodom (1975), Casanova (1976), Caligula (1979), Flash Gordon (1980), Pinocchio (2002) )Ĭostume Design Genre: Fantastical, Period-InfluencedĪ sort of indirect follow-up to the two Conan films based on the comic book character itself based on Robert E Howard's stories, Red Sonja had none other than the esteemed Danilo Donati acting as both costume designer and production designer, in one of his few films to have worked on outside Italy, the other being the famously vibrant Flash Gordon - just like in that film, Donati's costumes here would utilise a lot of golden trim and masked headpieces, though this was also closer to more familiar territory, considering Donati's work on several historical and mythological films such as Zeffirelli's The Taming of the Shrew, Pasolini's The Canterbury Tales, Arabian Nights and Oedipus Rex, and Fellini's Satyricon - the totally fantastical nature of Red Sonja's setting, however, would mean much more variety in the historical inspiration for the various robes and armor suits seen in the film, as well as Donati's attention to ornate detail on every outfit.
